There are many famous thinkers that have lived on this earth who have made significant changes to everyone’s lives. A couple famous thinkers stand out amongst them all. These two are Mr. Bill Gates and Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Their contributions society have been great and were based off of their personal, social and political environments. They had both sought to solve problems or issues that people faced and they were able to provide solutions and implement them. The solutions they provided all followed a creative process, which will be compared to each other, and their ideas will be critiqued to discuss what they could have done differently. Contributions to Society Mr. Bill Gates and Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. have both contributed to society in different ways. Bill Gates had gained immense wealth through the creation and sales of Microsoft Windows, and he is using this wealth for philanthropic reasons. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation contributes to societies throughout the world. Their contributions range from providing vaccines in Africa, to financial services for the poor in the United States. These contributions affect society as they provide better health by helping prevent illness and helping better the lives of those less fortunate. Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. lead the change in gaining equal civil rights for African Americans by using nonviolent civil disobedience. The Environment Mr Bill Gates and Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. lived in different environments which attributed to their creativity in solving problems or issues. Bill Gates was raised in a financially responsible family, and attended a preparatory school which allowed him to focus on computer programming. This environment allowed Bill Gates to excel in what he loved and create the Microsoft organization. Bill Gates gained enormous wealth through his creation of Microsoft, which he now uses for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. lived in a rough environment. He grew up where African Americans where considered a lesser person and were segregated because of their race. This eventually lead Martin Luther King Jr. to take lead in the civil rights movement, which brought him to direct the march on Washington, D.C and give his â€Å"I Have a Dream† speech. Solving Problems or Issues Mr. Bill Gates and Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. both address issues in society. Bill Gates addresses issues across the world, where Martin Luther King Jr. addresses civil rights issues in the United States. Bill Gates, through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, currently aids in numerous issues throughout the world. Some of the more widely known issues are support for better education in the United States, and contributions to providing vaccinations in Africa. The issues that Bill Gates seeks to solve is poor education in the United States and to prevent disease and death in developing countries. Martin Luther King Jr. had addressed the civil rights issues to help gain equal rights for African Americans in the United States by use of nonviolent civil disobedience. Solutions The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation works through funding other non-profit organizations working towards the common goal of helping impoverished people, providing health services in developing countries, and helping better the education system in the United States. Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had a solution to bring the people together and spread the word of equal civil rights through speech, and motivation. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke at several different venues through the United States prior to the â€Å"I Have a Dream† speech in Washington, D.C. At the â€Å"I Have a Dream† speech, over 250,000 people attended and marched, showing non-violent civil disobedience. (The Nobel Foundation, 1964). Comparing the Creative Processes Bill Gate’s creative process was very simple in the fact that he has money, and wants to do good with it. His process was to create the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, find non-profit organizations that share a common goal, support them financially and repeat the process. Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had a more complex creative process, where he had to bring the African American people together and get the leaders of the United States to listen. Martin Luther King Jr. began by traveling the United States, speaking where civil rights of African Americans where being denied. Through his speeches and travel, he brought together the African American people and accomplished the goal of gaining equal civil rights (The Nobel Foundation, 1964). Critique of Ideas The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation can take an active role in their philanthropic ideals. The foundation currently supports other non-profit organizations that work toward the foundations goals. If Bill Gates could turn the foundation around and actively work towards their goals by doing something themselves, they may achieve greater success as other organization seeking support can follow their lead. Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. should not have done anything different. His motives of showing the world that the African American people are humans too, and deserve equal civil rights was conducted in a non-violent manner and accomplished his goal to gain equal civil rights. Conclusion Mr. Bill Gates and Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. have provided great contributions to society across the world and in the United States. Their environments helped bring about this desire to contribute as they had both sought to solve problems or issues faced by society. The solutions they provided all followed a creative process, which Bill Gates could have done a better job at and Martin Luther King Jr. couldn’t have done better. They make students think that high school is just like college, and they teach unnecessary classes that make students think that college is easy when its not. The poor teaching skills in many high schools lead to students not being prepared for college. Consequently, the values of all securities that were tied to real estate pricing in the United States plummeted significantly leading to the damage of the financial institutions, both in the United States and the world at large. The challenges that resulted from the insolvency in the banking industry led to a decline in the availability of credit. This led to decline in investor confidence that impacted negatively on the stock markets around the globe leading to large losses in the stock markets especially in 2009. Economies from all over the world slowed down significantly during this period as international trade declined and credit tightened (Lahart, 140). While there have been many suggested causes of the crisis by the experts, the senate of the United States issued a report on the same. It ruled out the possibility of the crisis being a natural disaster. Instead, it explained the crisis as having resulted from complex and high-risk financial products; conflicts of interest t hat had remained undisclosed; failure by credit rating agencies and regulators; and the market which was reported to rein in the Wall Street excesses (Lahart, 142). On the other hand, Ross explains that investors and credit rating agencies failed to do accurate pricing of the risk that was involved with the financial products related to the mortgage sector. They also claimed that the government failed to adjust the regulatory practices that would address the financial markets in the twenty first century appropriately. We read about such a mentor in the novel Fahrenheit 451. In the novel, Ray Bradbury writes about Guy Montag and his life- changing journey. Montag begins in the novel as a conformist who doesn’t really think for himself but throughout the novel with the help of mentors he begins to think for himself and doesn’t just conform to society. The title, Finny’s Break, is revealing of not just the physical break that occurs, but also in a deeper sense it is symbolic of the friendship’s emotional and psychological break that transpires. This decision to jounce the limb has many disastrous repercussions which are unremitting upon Gene, his friends and the school itself. The first and probably most significant of the mentors is Clarisse. Clarisse is a free spirit, who claimed to be seventeen, but with her wisdom she spoke as a seventy year old woman. With her sweet, innocent charm, she opened Montag’s eyes to see his life for what it truly was. For instance, when Clarisse says â€Å"Did you look at the stretched-out billboard like I told you.† This illustrates Clarisse influence on Montag to actually analyze his surroundings. She was the first mentor to spark Montag’s curiosity to ask why. Clarisse showed Montag that individuality is important from tasting rain to having a deep conversation with family. Clarisse definitely brought Montag out of his old way and encouraged him to think. When Montag and Faber first met, Montag knew that he would make a huge impact on him one day. Faber taught Montag to take his ideas to a grander scale. For instance when Montag says â€Å"I thought if it turned out that book were worthwhile, we might get a press and print some extra copies†. Faber replies with â€Å"Now, if you suggest that we print extra books and Miller arrange to have them hidden in firemen’s house all over the country†(85). In addition, Faber explained the deeper meaning of books to Montag, â€Å"It’s not books you need, it’s some of the   things that once were in books†(82). Montag needed this wisdom to in order to understand   what he was fighting for. Beatty may not seem like much of a mentor to Montag, however he was, but the way he taught him was in a negative way that it pushed Montag to be bold. For example when Captain Beatty said â€Å"Go ahead now, you second-hand litterateur, pull the trigger.† in which Montag responded â€Å"we never burned right†¦ †(119). This shows how Beatty’s negative influence toward Montag helped him realize that he wasn’t burning the right things in his life. Instead of burning books they should have been burning the televisions and the ignorance that the society had. This push lead to Montag burning Beatty, which is the start of his vendetta. In Fahrenheit 451, Bradbury illustrates how a mentor can have a life changing impact. This I sometimes think drivers dont know what grass is, or flowers, because they never see them slowly. The Scarlet Letter Vs The Awakening The novel The Scarlet Letter written by Nathaniel Hawthorne is largely based on the act of adultery, identity, and love. Similarly, The Awakening, written by Kate Chopin connects well with the Scarlet Letter as it shares a similar themes, motifs of self-discovery and the way of struggles. The main characters, Hester Prynne and Edna Pontellier, develop these struggles and hardships by allowing their desires overcome themselves and as a result, these overwhelming aspirations come with consequences. Ultimately, the reality of life and the consequences of certain situations combined can drive a human spirit into a state where there is no return. The protagonists from The Scarlet Letter and The Awakening share similar characterics, thus being that they are both strong-willed women. Hester protects her true love, Reverend Dimmesdale, as she is put on the scaffold, by taking her consequences head-on and taking matters into her own hands. As a result, Hester now wears an embroidered letter A boldly onto her and has to endure all the humiliation from the public due to her act of adultery. This act could have been easily avoided by fleeing, as no one else would have idea what the true meaning of the letter is, but Hester did not want to run away from her problems, instead she acknowledged it. This choice alone pays off in the end as the meaning of the letter changes to adulterer to able They said that it meant Able; so strung was Hester Prynne, with a womans strength. (Chapter 13, page 139). On the contrary, Edna takes charge of herself by leading herself to her own self-discovery. She is able to tolerate her husband and other pr oblems occurrences in her life. As bits of her are being gathered, Edna finds herself to be isolated from others more often than usual, but even at this state, Edna remains strong and determined. Independence for Edna is key to her identity; the main leap towards this independence was when she had moved to the pigeon house. Being able to escape from her own home, which all of her husband possessions always surrounded her, she was able to get away from being one of his belongings herself. Edna moves to this house, without the compliance of her own husband, Without even waiting for an answer from her husband regarding his opinion or wishes in the matter, Edna hastened her preparations for quitting her home on Esplanade Street and moving into the little house around the block. (Chapter 29, Page 220). This action alone shows how strong she is as she is willing to change what she is and isnt afraid of the consequences of her own actions. Lastly, these two novels share more than just sins and despair, but share love and intimacy with another individual. Following their hearts, Hester and Edna did not follow marital structures they dared to challenge the traditionsof society in a way that would allow them to be viewed as sinners. Hester had once fell for a man named Chillingworth, but eventually lost feelings for him due to his absence of two years. Hester eventually falls in love with an individual of higher status, the towns minister, Arthur Dimmesdale. The love that Hester had for Dimmesdale was like no other. Her love with him was so strong that she was willing to take all shame and humiliation of her sins, without revealing the identity of her partner when she was asked on the scaffold Madam Hester absolutely refuseth to speak, and the magistrates have laid their heads together in vain. (Chapter 3, Page 19). Ednas consequences were not as severe as Hesters, but her love for others was expected and rather spontane ous. Ednas love for Leonce was purely an accident (Chapter 7, page 46) falling in love with him because of his devotion and dedication to her. Eventually, Edna falls in love with Robert; her love grows stronger each passing day when she is not with him. In conclusion, the protagonists from these two novels, Hester Prynne and Edna Pontellier share similar stories. The two different storylines were able to have a connection through multiple ways, whether it was committing wrongdoings, having strong determination for situations or having an emotion of affection and personal attachment to a certain individual. These actions of wrongdoings can demonstrate how an individual is able to surpass their sins to a point where it allows them to discover their true selves.
